Las trampas del azar (The Traps of Chance) is a late-stage play by Antonio Buero Vallejo, in which private error and historical force become inseparably intertwined. The drama begins with a seemingly trivial act: a boy, irritated by an electric streetlight, shatters it in the night. The falling glass injures a young girl—later revealed to be the person he loves most. From this accidental wound, Buero Vallejo unfolds a powerful meditation on fate, guilt, and responsibility. Childhood negligence grows into lifelong moral scars, while individual impulses collide with overwhelming political currents. In this work, Buero Vallejo employs his mature theatrical techniques to portray an invisible, godlike destiny that merges its will with that of the characters, transforming personal tragedy into a reflection of collective human suffering.
