"Russians in Iran: Diplomacy & Power in the Qajar Era" by Rudi Matthee explores the complex and often tense relationship between Russia and Iran during the Qajar period (1789-1925). The book provides a detailed account of Russian influence in Iran, focusing on diplomacy, political power, and military interactions between the two nations. Matthee examines the key events and treaties, such as the Treaty of Gulistan (1813) and the Treaty of Turkmenchay (1828), which resulted in significant territorial losses for Iran and increased Russian control over parts of the Caucasus. He also explores Russia's efforts to dominate Iran’s political landscape, including its involvement in internal affairs, from economic concessions to military interventions. This historical work sheds light on the broader geopolitical strategies of imperial Russia.
