A Girl in Exile: Requiem for Linda B. is a haunting novel by Albanian author Ismail Kadare, originally published in Albanian in 2009 and translated into English by John Hodgson in 2016. Set during the final years of Enver Hoxha’s dictatorship, the story follows Rudian Stefa, a playwright summoned by the Party Committee after a young woman, Linda B., is found dead with a signed copy of his book in her possession. As Rudian investigates, he uncovers Linda's life in internal exile and the oppressive mechanisms of the regime. Kadare weaves a narrative that blends elements of mystery and myth, drawing parallels to the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, to explore themes of censorship, guilt, and the psychological toll of authoritarianism.
