The book you're referring to is likely Winter in Wartime (Oorlogswinter) by Jan Terlouw, a renowned Dutch author and former politician. First published in 1972, this historical novel is a gripping coming-of-age story set during the final winter of World War II in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. It follows 15-year-old Michiel, the son of a village mayor, who becomes inadvertently involved in the Dutch Resistance. His journey unfolds as he hides a wounded British pilot and navigates the complexities of loyalty, betrayal, and survival under occupation. Drawing from his own childhood experiences, Terlouw crafts a narrative that delves into the moral ambiguities of war, challenging the clear-cut distinctions between good and evil. The novel has been lauded for its nuanced portrayal of wartime dilemmas and has been adapted into a 2008 film, further cementing its place as a significant work in Dutch literature.
