"Vinegar Girl" is a novel by Anne Tyler, published in 2016 as part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series, which features contemporary retellings of Shakespearean plays. "Vinegar Girl" is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." In Tyler's version, the story is set in present-day Baltimore and follows the life of Kate Battista, a young woman who feels stuck in her role as caretaker for her eccentric father and her younger sister, Bunny. When her father's brilliant but socially awkward lab assistant, Pyotr, faces deportation, Kate is pressured into agreeing to a marriage of convenience to help him stay in the country. As Kate and Pyotr navigate their unusual arrangement, their relationship evolves in unexpected ways, challenging their preconceived notions about love, identity, and independence.
