The novel begins with Andrews being tasked by drug traffickers to smuggle a shipment of drugs across the border. While crossing the border, Andrews gets into an altercation with customs officers, during which one of the officers is killed. Forced to flee from the police, Andrews also finds himself on the run from the traffickers, having failed to deliver the drugs. He escapes into the mountains and eventually reaches a remote village in the forest, where he meets a young woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth has recently lost her husband, which has led to harassment from the men in the village. She sees Andrews as someone who can protect her from these troublesome neighbors. Encouraged by Elizabeth, Andrews is persuaded to turn himself in to the police and testify against the traffickers and his former accomplices..
