Description

The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht is a landmark work of epic theatre set against the chaos of civil war. When a governor is overthrown, a humble servant girl, Grusha, risks everything to rescue and raise his abandoned child. Years later, after peace is restored, the child’s biological mother returns to claim him for selfish reasons. The dispute is brought before the unconventional judge Azdak, whose ironic wisdom challenges corrupt authority. Through the famous “chalk circle” test, Brecht explores justice, ownership, and moral responsibility, arguing that true right belongs to those who care rather than those who merely possess power.
