Set in a shabby seaside boarding house, the play follows Stanley, a reclusive lodger living with Meg and Petey. Their stagnant routine is disrupted by the arrival of two mysterious men, Goldberg and McCann, whose polite manners conceal a menacing purpose. Under the pretext of celebrating Stanley’s birthday, they subject him to psychological interrogation and humiliation, turning the party into a surreal nightmare. By morning, Stanley is mentally broken and leaves with them. Through ambiguity, menace, and silences, Pinter explores themes of identity, authority, and existential vulnerability.
