In Studies on Hysteria (1895), Breuer and Freud presented a series of case studies and theoretical articles on the etiology of hysteria and the role of hypnosis in treating it. The authors claimed that hysterical symptoms have a symbolic meaning of which the patient had no conscious knowledge.
