Ariobarzanes of Persis

Ariobarzanes, also spelled as Ario Barzan or Aryo Barzan and commonly known as Ariobarzanes the Brave, was an Achaemenid prince, satrap and a Persian military commander who led a last stand of the Persian army at the Battle of the Persian Gate against Macedonian King Alexander the Great in the winter of 330 BC. The strait Darband of Pars near the present-day city of Yasuj became the battlefield of Ariobarzanes and Alexander. Alexander’s unfamiliarity with the region was to the advantage of the Persians, who for a time sought a way around the strait until, according to Greek historians, a local shepherd or farmer showed the Macedonians the way through the mountains, and Alexander with his two commanders, Philotas and Cratros , Aryobarzan and his men are attacked from three directions.
