The collection of stories "Smell of Strange Mountain" by Robert Olen Butler is an acclaimed work of American literature that examines the effects of the Vietnam War on Vietnamese immigrants living in America. Each of the stories in this collection is told by a Vietnamese immigrant who lives in the state of Louisiana. Also, the Vietnam war and the experiences of these immigrants in facing it are the main focus of these narratives. In the opening story, the narrator, who is an interpreter for the Australian forces, recounts his experience working with a Vietnamese communist named Top. Topp, accused of treason by the Northern Communists, has joined the Australian forces. In a key scene, when Australian soldiers bring Top to watch pornographic films, he shows his distaste and discomfort.
