"How Did We Become Us?" by Sadegh Zibakalam is a book that seeks to explain the roots, reasons, and mechanisms behind Iran's backwardness. Zibakalam articulates in the introduction that he aims to address a series of important "whys" regarding the roots of backwardness in Iran and find answers to these questions: Why were our kings corrupt and bad? Why weren't the kings of France or England all bad and corrupt? Why were our men in the Qajar era subservient to foreign embassies? Why weren't the men of England, Russia, or France subservient and dependent? And many other "whys"... Zibakalam endeavors in this book to depart from conventional theories, which often attribute Iran's backwardness to communist or colonial roots. He believes that colonialism is not the cause of Iran's backwardness.
