The Palace of Dreams is a dystopian novel set in an unnamed empire resembling the Ottoman Empire, where a vast bureaucratic institution is dedicated to interpreting the dreams of all citizens. The protagonist, Mark-Alem, a young man from a noble Albanian family, is recruited into this institution, known as the Palace of Dreams. As he ascends the bureaucratic ladder, he becomes entangled in the complexities and moral ambiguities of the system. The novel explores themes of power, surveillance, and the manipulation of truth, serving as an allegory for totalitarian regimes. Kadare's work is often compared to Kafka's The Trial and Orwell's 1984 for its critique of oppressive political systems.
