The Oresteia by Aeschylus is the only surviving trilogy of ancient Greek tragedy and a profound exploration of justice, vengeance, and the evolution of societal order. Composed of three plays—Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides—the trilogy follows the cursed House of Atreus. It begins with the return of King Agamemnon from the Trojan War and his murder by his wife, Clytemnestra, in revenge for sacrificing their daughter. The second play depicts their son Orestes avenging his father’s death by killing Clytemnestra, leading to his psychological torment and pursuit by the Furies.
