Description
The Misanthrope by Molière is a satirical play that exposes the hypocrisy of the French aristocracy while exploring universal human flaws. Unlike typical comedies of its time, it focuses on complex, realistic characters like Alceste and Célimène rather than simple caricatures. The play emphasizes character and moral depth over plot twists. Though not a success when first performed, it is now considered Molière’s most famous work. After earlier plays faced censorship, Molière made this one more socially acceptable. Even Jean-Jacques Rousseau admired it but criticized Molière for mocking Alceste’s idealism instead of celebrating it.
