The Divan of Hafez bookDescription
The Divan of Hafez is the complete collection of all poems attributed to Hafez-e Shirazi, one of the most celebrated Persian poets. First officially compiled and published between 1200 and 1206 AH, the divan preserves his ghazals, qasidas, masnavis, qit’as, and rubaiyat. While the number of poems varies across different editions, the ghazals—around 500 in total—form the core of his work, exploring themes of love, mysticism, philosophy, and reflections on the society of his time. Some of his qasidas resemble ghazals, and a few masnavis indicate his engagement with classical works like Vis and Ramin, Iqbalnama, and Sharafnama. His qit’as often record historical events, while the rubaiyat appear mainly in later editions. Hafez’s poetry is widely cherished by both scholars and the general public, making his divan a staple in Iranian homes and a focal point of literary and cultural studies worldwide.
