Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids is a novel by Kenzaburō Ōe, first published in 1958, that tells the gripping story of fifteen delinquent boys who are taken from their homes during wartime and transported to a remote mountain village. Feared and disliked by the villagers, the boys soon find themselves completely abandoned when a deadly plague spreads through the area. Trapped in the deserted village, they attempt to build an independent life marked by cooperation, dignity, and moments of courage. Yet their fragile hopes are overshadowed by the looming presence of death and the brutal reality of a war created by adults—suggesting that their brief attempt at freedom and humanity is ultimately doomed.
