The story is narrated by Don Isidoro Vidal, a sixty-year-old man living in a world where the youth attack and kill the elderly. Vidal and his elderly friends struggle to survive in this ruthless world, as they witness their friends disappearing or being murdered, all while living in constant fear and growing terror. The novel The Invention of Morel takes place in a fictional world where the young, using the excuse of resource shortages and economic problems, attack the elderly. This novel is an allegory of the military dictatorship in Argentina, where political opponents and critics of the regime were brutally suppressed. Through this allegory, Casares offers a harsh critique of violence, injustice, and repression in Argentine society.
