“Macbet / Improvisation Alma” is a collection of two plays by Eugène Ionesco, the ever-critical observer of the modern world. Known for his wit, exuberance, and sometimes irritable and irreverent personality, Ionesco wrote in French despite not being French by birth. The first play, Macbet, is an avant-garde, nihilistic parody of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, humorously highlighting the folly and absurdity of those in power while maintaining a surprising resemblance to its source. The second play, Improvisation Alma, features Ionesco himself as the protagonist, confronting three critics who insist on teaching him how to write. Both works showcase Ionesco’s sharp humor, his disdain for pretentious criticism, and his mastery of theatrical form, turning absurdity, folly, and personal eccentricity into compelling, thought-provoking drama.
