Description
Henry IV is a modern adaptation of Luigi Pirandello’s classic play Enrico IV (1921), reimagined by Tom Stoppard and first published in 2005. The play follows a nobleman who, after falling from a horse during a medieval carnival reenactment, believes himself to be Emperor Henry IV. For two decades, he lives in a meticulously reconstructed 11th-century villa in Umbria, surrounded by family and servants who sustain his delusion. When a psychiatrist is brought to confront him with reality, unexpected revelations unfold, exploring the fragile boundary between sanity and madness. Stoppard preserves Pirandello’s philosophical themes of identity, illusion, and the fluidity of self while infusing contemporary sensibilities, creating a multilayered, thought-provoking examination of perception, social masks, and the nature of reality.
