Description
Das Augenspiel: Lebensgeschichte 1931-37 by Elias Canetti is set in 1920s Vienna and follows the life of Peter Kin, a reclusive linguist and bibliophile completely absorbed in his books and studies. After the death of his wife, Kin retreats further into isolation, gradually losing his grip on reality. The story takes a turn when his housekeeper, Therese, marries a man named Ferdinand and brings him into Kin’s home. Ferdinand, a cunning opportunist, slowly takes control of Kin’s life, depriving him even of his beloved books. Left with nothing to lose, Kin ventures into the chaotic and merciless streets of the city, encountering people who exploit him in various ways. Through Kin’s tragic descent, Canetti explores obsession, alienation, and the perils of intellectual and social isolation.
