Description
Convenience Store Woman tells the compelling and quietly humorous story of 36-year-old Keiko Furukura, a woman living in Tokyo who has never quite fit in with her family or society. At eighteen, she begins working at the Hiromachi branch of “Smile Mart” and finally finds a sense of purpose and belonging. In the convenience store, she understands the unspoken rules of social interaction—many of which are even outlined in the store manual—and meticulously mimics the behavior, speech, and appearance of her coworkers. Over eighteen years, managers come and go, but Keiko remains devoted to her work. While she is content in her routine, family and friends increasingly pressure her to conform to societal expectations: to marry, pursue a “proper” career, and live a conventional life, pushing her toward a desperate and unconventional choice. The novel is a subtle, satirical exploration of individuality, social conformity, and what it means to live authentically.
