Description
A Pair of Blue Eyes by Thomas Hardy, published in 1873 (first serialized between September 1872 and July 1873), is Hardy’s third novel and the first to appear under his own name. The story centers on Elfride Swancourt, a young woman caught in a romantic triangle between Stephen Smith, an ambitious but socially lower-class man who admires her, and Henry Knight, a socially established gentleman representing London society. Despite their friendship, Knight is unaware of Smith’s prior relationship with Elfride. The novel explores love, social class, ambition, and personal versus societal expectations, as Elfride navigates conflicts of the heart, mind, and social pressures from family and community. It combines romantic tension, psychological insight, and Hardy’s depiction of rural Wessex, reflecting both character emotions and social dynamics.
