A Mask the Color of the Sky is the fourth novel by Basem Khandakji, which won the 2024 International Prize for Arabic Fiction, also known as the Arabic Booker Prize, out of 133 novels published in Arabic. The author, by metaphorically wearing the mask of an occupier, seeks to understand the Zionist mindset. To do so, he joins an excavation mission in one of the settlements to uncover the buried Palestine, along with its entire history. He attempts to offer an imaginative biography of Mary Magdalene, the companion of Jesus Christ, and the secret teachings that Christ did not grant even to his best disciples, based on some historical writings. The story of Mary Magdalene serves as the backdrop for the novel Nour al-Shuhada, within which the author writes a note to his imprisoned companion, Murad.
