The main character of the story, Charlie Asher, is a calm and passive man who owns a secondhand store in San Francisco. Charlie, who previously had no connection to death or the world of the dead, is unexpectedly drawn into a realm filled with dark and supernatural mysteries. He discovers that he has now taken on the role of a "Death Merchant," meaning he must recover the souls of the deceased and protect them from the forces of the underworld and other sinister threats. At the same time, Charlie must deal with new challenges in his personal life, including raising his newborn daughter, Sophie. Sophie, due to her birth coinciding with her mother’s death, has a strange connection to the world of spirits and death, which complicates matters further.
